Our Hawker Centres – A Heritage and Art Project with NEA
The National Environment Agency (NEA) together with National Heritage Board and National Arts Council organised an Art and Heritage Initiative for existing hawker centres. This is an island-wide community project for schools to celebrate SG50 with art murals and art installations in hawker centres. The project aims to introduce art to existing empty spaces within the hawker centre so as to inject new meaning into common spaces and bring awareness to the historical and cultural value of hawker centres in Singapore. Pupils and teachers of the Art Clubs in CHIJ OLN did a series of paintings entitled “For the Love of Food”. The artworks highlight the people who passionately prepare and serve the dishes that define our culture, the foods which every Singaporean has grown up with. They have been mounted on the walls of the Kovan Market and Food Centre.
